Didja See? Usain Bolt lowers 100m AND 200m World Records (video)

Usain Bolt lowered his Men's 100m world record by an astounding .11 seconds in the World Athletics Championships in Berlin on Sunday, Aug. 16, 2009, then dominated the 200m four days later with a 19.19 second world record. Seventeen years had passed between Carl Lewis running the 100m in 9.86 seconds in 1991 and Usain Bolt going .14sec faster in May 2008, but he's already chopping it down by huge amounts. The scientists who predicted man couldn't run that fast for another 20 years are going back to the books.

How fast can he go? Usain thinks 9.4's is possible. Some say he might need some assistance from technology (luckily he and all the sprinters tested negative for doping). But one thing for sure, he's in a league of his own.

Check out the video. It sure is cool to be alive at a time when others can show us the limitless potential of the human spirit.

[update] - Usain Bolt extended his domination by running 19.19 for 200m, .11 seconds faster than his previous world record. Video above. Wow!

  1. The announcer actually made a really good prediction: "if you stay tuned, you may witness sports history"

  2. That was pretty amazing, he looks so effortless.

My only complaint is Bolt gets all the attention and then a guy like Bekele wins his 10,000 meter title, 4th straight (6th straight if you count Olympics) and has never lost a 10,000 in his life but gets almost no press!

The 10,000 meter world record change (on a % improvement basis) since 1991 is actually a bigger drop then the 100m dash world record change over the same period!

  3. Mike - totally agree. I couldn't even find a video of Bekele (of course, that would be a long video). Plus he's going for the 5k/10k double gold, just like in Beijing. All at the age of 27!

Here's a good article from the NY Times talking about his performance, and hiding in the shadows of Bolt. Simply amazing.

  4. He will easily run faster with better technique. He stood up far too early in the race. He will hit the 9.4s when he corrects this.

  5. He's done it again...

BERLIN – Usain Bolt has set a world record of 19.19 seconds in the 200 meters at the world championships, adding to the gold he won in the 100.

Exactly one year after taking gold at the Beijing Games with a record of 19.30, Bolt had an even greater run Thursday. He shaved 0.11 seconds off his previous mark, as he did in setting the record in the 100 on Sunday.

Alonso Edward of Panama was second, a distant 0.62 seconds behind. Wallace Spearmon of the United States took the bronze.

Defending champion Tyson Gay was out with an injury.
